Many Japanese people have memories of graduation trips to Kyoto, the ancient capital which is famous for its cultural traditions and historic sites. Kyoto is seen as the most Japanese city in Japan.
However, the city has a great number of visitors from all over the world and non-Japanese residents. Foreign tourists are reading guidebooks in front of Kyoto Station, wondering where they want to visit first and which method of transportation to take.
Other non-Japanese people take photos of their friends and loved ones. Yes, Kyoto is increasingly becoming an international city.

Not too long ago, the Japanese government announced a policy to make Japan a ‘tourism nation’.
The project includes a variety of measures that aim to increase domestic and international tourism. As a first step the government established the Japan Tourism Agency (JTA) on October 1, 2008.
The JTA is developing various tourism-related initiatives with the goal of attracting ten million international visitors annually to Japan.

Japanese people are often thought of as great lovers of nature. It is also observed that they really understand the value of the beauty of Japan.
Japan's geographical traits helped to develop their sensitivity to the beauty in landscape. History has also played a part in forming their aesthetic sense

When cherry trees come into full bloom people will not only walk around and enjoy the sight but also sit on mats below the trees and enjoy talking, drinking, and singing.
Most Japanese believe that it is very natural for them to enjoy cherry trees this way, but they are wrong.

In the Edo era, people came to be fascinated with the cherry blossoms for the first time. Before then, the space under the cherry blossoms was not a delightful spot and was rather avoided.
This was because people were afraid of its atmosphere. They even sensed the presence of some evil spirit there, especially when no one was around. In fact, some people were said to get lost there.

In the past, at Suzuka Pass, which is still famous for its cherry trees, travelers had to pass through the cherry tree forest and they used to run through it as fast as they could. When travelers came to the forest in the spring, their fear would peak.
Even the best of friendships between two travelers could be broken by the time they reached the other end of the forest, since the slower runner would have a deep grudge against his faster friend.

This belief in the magic power of the cherry blossoms provided Ango Sakaguchi with an inspiration of his famous novel In the Forest, Under Cherries in Full Bloom. In this novel a robber attacked travelers at Suzuka Pass, but fell victim to the evil spirit of the cherry blossoms.
